[This is the first 11 pages of my new novel. It’s a lonely piece, but hopefully not miserable. If it is miserable then just stop reading and click onto something else. Tomomi at the HK film festival maybe? If you get to the end and like it, please write a comment and tell me why. If you think it’s shit, tell me why. Thanks.]

Why Peter O’ Toole let go. Why Bodhi went back into the storm…

I watch Michael Portillo fake-dying on TV.

It’s almost 2am and he’s trying to find the perfect way to execute prisoners.

My housemate is asleep, and I don’t have to work until late the next day, so I stay up and stretch out on the couch and focus on the screen.

For a few weeks, I’ve been interested in suicide.

Not for myself, but the idea of it.

At least I don’t think it’s for myself.

But it would be nice to know there’s a way…that there’s a way to do it, if things really were that bad.

Something non violent, non painful.

Some kind of gas, maybe? Read the rest of this entry »

At the Hong Kong Film Festival [with Tomomi Leung]

That’s right, dudes, I’m in Hong Kong.

It’s not really a long story either. There I was in my shitty LA apartment, which is actually just a few apartments down from where Bukowski lived…y’know, the dude who used to fuck around a lot and drink fridges dry…okay, he didn’t live there exactly, more like stayed a few nights…see, the woman he was fucking, she used to live there and, yeah, I know, not much of a trophy, but I’m actually kinda low right now so I’m gonna hold up whatever I can, y’know? [Yeah, if you really have to know, I got dropped from ‘The A Team’ and another thing I can’t really talk about…fucking hierarchies…even in post, you never know if you’re actually in it]… Read the rest of this entry »

The heavily truncated life of Harry “Harry” Hamlin

By Pat Black

When Harryhausen, the divine creator, first put Harry Hamlin together, he had some cause for pride. The strapping young lad might not have been as spectacular as Talos, the Cyclops or the skeleton army, but he was an especially fine human specimen. With strong, twisty wire for a skeleton, some moulding clay to flesh him out and an especially fine head of tousled black hair, the young Harry offered a striking aspect. The creator completed this image with a skirt and toga and a pair of Jesus sandals, as befit one of the ancient Greek heroes.

“My son,” the creator said, beaming. He gave Harry his first movement, a twitch of the fingers, then took a single-frame shot with the camera.

This went on for many months, with the creator carrying out a frame-by-frame animation of Harry as he executed some complex breakdancing manoeuvres.

“Father,” Harry said to the creator, “I’m pleased to be able to dance for you. But I wonder, when will I be able to make my own way in the world?” Read the rest of this entry »

The Rock and Roll Deconstruction Daddio – ‘Other Side’

Amidst tales of heroin abuse, alcohol abuse and body-building er, abuse, one element of controversy stands out about today’s band; is the red hot chili pepper a fruit or a vegetable?

I’ll put this one to rest here and now; botanically speaking the chili is a berry. Band members rejected the other contenders such as The Cute Little Raspberries and The Healthy Anti-Oxidant Blueberries before finally settling on a moniker that would conjure up pleasant memories of being burned at both ends after a spicy meal.

Despite this, the RHCPs have never achieved the commercial success they deserve. But still, having lost the shirts off their backs, and sometimes with nothing left in their wardrobes but a single sock per member, they continue to funk on regardless, and I for one applaud their dedication. ‘The un-confidence of George McFly’ [Story Notes]

In Gupter Puncher/Oli Johns on April 2, 2010 at 1:08 pm

Themes – Racism, fighting black-white segregation/violence, ‘Back To The Future’ framework.

Aims – To see if it’s possible to bring about Civil Rights before its time.

To show that a black movement needs a black leader.

To show that most white Americans were like George McFly.

Notes –

Starts in 2010…or 1985?

Main character, me, watches a shit load of docs on racism in the Deep South, ‘Glory’, ‘Do the Right Thing’…goes on wiki and reads about the murders that happened there…watches ‘In the Heat of the Night’ and ‘Murder in Mississippi’…goes on youtube and watches the ending of the last one…the three civil rights workers shot and buried…the black guy the last to die, defiant…

Meaning? The whites can help, but ultimately the black people have to stand up for themselves?

I sleepwalk through the next few days and dream of saving all those who were murdered…those three civil rights workers…maybe I could get a rifle and go back and intervene…? Maybe I could blink and take myself back there? Read the rest of this entry »
